Overview of FlutterBytes

The FlutterBytes Conference and Community is a leading initiative dedicated to connecting professionals, thought leaders, and innovators within the African tech ecosystem who use the Flutter/Dart Programming Framework.

FlutterBytes Conference
The annual conference is a premier, in-person event, typically held in Lagos, Nigeria, designed for Flutter enthusiasts ranging from beginners to seasoned experts. The conference aims to foster skill-building, collaboration, and innovation, emphasizing the practical applications of Flutter and its future in cross-platform development.

I lead the design team for FlutterBytes and we use Figma primarily for designs (~98% of our designs).

The 2025 edition was the 4th edition of The FlutterBytes Conference.

Social Media & Marketing...

The designs for this year’s edition of FlutterBytes started with the announcement video to tell the general public that we are back and would be organising the 4th edition of the conference. The video can be found on the page’s twitter (X) handle...

Afterwards, various designs then started including sponsorship deck, call for speakers, sponsors & volunteers followed by announcement of venue, date, theme, speaker, sponsors etc.

For 2025’s edition, as the design direction, I wanted us to use pictures & assets from past editions of the conferences to make the designs more relatable and to subtly serve as reminders/throwbacks.

Call for Speakers

Additional designs were done to remind potential applicants of the deadline to apply to speak.

In a bid to keep the design minimal yet creative, I used the style shown here and it came out pretty good.

Like I mentioned earlier, we used pictures from past editions for the various “Call For...” flyers.

We also designed a banner version of the call for speakers to use on FlutterBytes’ Sessionise Profile.

The Evolution of The Speaker’s Announcement Designs

The announcement of speakers design was really stressful and tedious.
The process involved first designing the book-like cover for each speaker and then mock it up before finally adding the “Meet The Speakers” text to it. And I did it for 33 "whole" Speakers; It made me think about how I got here, to be honest 😅😂😭

But I loved how it made it feel more real because each session is like a book where the speaker is the author. So, That was the “Why” behind the design.

The Website

The website design for the Event

This is the landing page of the website. We designed the full website last year. We didn’t change much in the website apart from the hero section. Also, we did the dark theme and mobile responsive versions of the website.

Website Design

We also added a section on the website for the product showcase session. One of my colleagues; Tobi worked on this and I really love how he made use of the hero page’s background creatively.

Event Identity

WordMark, Patterns & Icons

To give the designs for the event a unified feel, I quickly realised the need for a mini-brand identity which I now call event identity.

This was the building blocks that made all other designs faster and coherent. It took long to design these building blocks but eventually we did & it was worth it.

The Theme of the Event was...
Flutter: The Framework of The Future

So the focus while coming up with the WordMark was achieving something that represented the theme as much as possible.

Keywords:

Flutter: Programming, Coding, Software, Developers

Framework: Structure, Building Blocks, Foundation, System

Future: Advanced tech, Next gen, AI, Blockchain/Web3, IoT, VR

Joshua worked on this and the creativity behind it is so
mind-blowing to me. I really love itt!

Backdrop Banner

The backdrop design was done by my colleague, Tobi.

I loved how it was different from typical backdrops but still came out very beautiful.

Banners

Of course, there were networking sessions during the event and the video above was used to help coordinate the networking session. A few of the attendees were called on stage to introduce/pitch themselves within a minute before the countdown runs out. The aim was to help connect related attendees and mentors with mentees.

The Activities

Up Next are the designs for the Activities Area. We had some banners with engaging contents for attendees to participate in,
at a designated area we called the Arena.

We had 7 main activities as listed below:

Flutter/Dart Scrabble

FBC Maze Puzzle

Entrance Video

One beautiful highlight was the audio that was played on repeat at the entrance of the main hall. I personally worked on it to make it feel futuristic and give attendees the feeling of stepping into a different zone like the sound says. And it synced well with the floor stickers and the timing of walking from the stairs to the main door. And we added starry lights at the stairs to make it all cohesive. It was beautiful as shown in the video below

Futuristic Jacket

The organizing team got the futuristic jacket that really looked like jackets worn when going to the moon. And various members of the organising team rocked it beautifully, combining it with outfits that really matched.

The Prototype sent to the fashion designer was created with AI. This really helped to give accurate description of what we aimed to achieve.

Thank You for Reading Through

It really was a lot of work but it was worth it. Creating the whole event experience by the in-house design team was helpful in cutting costs of experience design down by about 50% in 7 figures.

Thank You for coming
